Chapter 18
âI am going back to London,â Lavinia said as her friends settled around her in a small drawing room for afternoon tea.
âWhat?â
âWhy?â
âYou canât!â all three said at the same time.
âIs it because of Kensington and me?â Caroline scooted closer to the edge of her seat.
âDoes it have anything to do with my uncle? Because he left for a ride in a really bad mood just a moment ago,â Victoria chimed in.
âYou canât expect me to travel back when weâve just arrived,â Annalise complained.
Lavinia closed her eyes briefly, preparing herself for what she had to say. âNo, Caroline, dear, it is not because of you and Dane⦠I mean⦠partially. But truly it is just because I am wasting my time here. My father is in London. He is dying. He could be already dead. And my stepmother is alone with him and my guardian. I left her there promising her a better life once I secured myself a husband, but the truth is, even if I marry, there is no guarantee it will solve any of my problems!â
She turned to Annalise. âI am sorry I dragged you all the way here in your condition, but I am certain you can stay and rest here for as long as you need, canât she?â The last she directed to Victoria.
âOf course,â Victoria said immediately.
âYou canât leave alone!â Annalise said sternly.
âNo. But I am certain that Lord Roth would spare me a maid.â Her voice hitched on his name. And then she added quieter, âI am sure he wouldnât want me to remain here, anyway.â
âSo, it is about my uncle!â Victoria exclaimed. âWhat did he do? Because if he hurt you in any wayââ
Lavinia put up a staying hand. âIt is not what he did⦠Rather, what I did.â
Annalise frowned. Victoria glanced from one woman to the next, trying to figure out if they understood what Lavinia meant, while Caroline just raised her brow.
Lavinia cleared her throat. âI tried to⦠I tried to compromise him.â
All three women blinked and looked at each other.
âCompromise what?â Victoria asked.
âShe means she put them both in a compromising position, so heâd be forced to marry her,â Caroline supplied.
Victoria turned toward Lavinia, aghast. âWhat did you do?â
Lavinia grimaced and looked away. âIt doesnât matter. Either way, it didnât work. I-I couldnât go through with it, and I stopped anything from happening.â
âOh, darling,â Annalise breathed.
âAnd I just⦠I need to get out of here.â
There was a beat of silence.
âI can order for a carriage to be prepared,â Caroline finally said.
Lavinia looked up at her. âThank you.â
âBut before I do⦠Are you certain this is what you want?â
Lavinia nodded gratefully. âYes, yes, it is.â
âVery well. The carriage shall be ready tomorrow morning.â
âTonight,â Lavinia pleaded. She could see her friendsâ worried faces, but she couldnât stay another night here. âPlease.â
Caroline nodded and stood. âVery well.â
She walked toward the door, and Lavinia dashed after her. âCaroline, wait.â
Caroline turned, her features expectant. Lavinia fiddled with her skirt, unable to meet her eyes. âI am sorry we drifted apart since your wedding to Dane.
